Tips for aspiring PR professionals

Trying to break into the Public Relations industry isn’t easy.

To help, the Public Relations team at Adoni Media has listed four of their top tips for aspiring PR professionals.

Build your network

The PR industry is all about who you know, so it’s very important to build relationships both with the media and others in the industry.

If you continue to network with PR professionals in the industry, you’re more likely to be offered opportunities when the time comes, while building a network of journalists is incredibly helpful when it comes to pitching them stories on behalf of clients.

Practise, practise, practise

Making the transition from university to the PR industry can be difficult, but it’s important to remember to build and practise your skills, particularly your writing skills.

This is because it can be quite difficult to pick writing back up when you have a break for a few months, or even weeks. If you continue to practise different writing styles including pitches, articles, media releases etc. you will notice it will be easier when you enter the industry – and you’ll have examples of work to show prospective employers.

Be patient

It’s unlikely you’ll walk into a senior position immediately after you complete your degree, so you need to be patient and continue working hard to break into the PR industry.

Continue to network with professionals and apply for internships. You might find an opportunity will arise while you’re interning at an agency and you’re the perfect fit for the position.

Don’t give up

As mentioned, it’s important to be patient when trying to break into the industry, but it’s also important to be persistent. It’s not likely an opportunity is simply going to knock at your door, so you need to follow up after interviews and continue to apply for positions and clock up work experience – don’t give up!
