Some of The Important Things to Consider Before Buying Hard Disk Drive

Hard disk drive is one of the most important components of any computing device. Not only do you need it for the storage requirements but it also affects the performance of your computer to a great extent. When it comes to buying a hard drive, there are a number of choices available. So, which is one is best for you? Here are some of the things to consider while choosing the drive.

Solid State Drive (SSD) or Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

One of the very first things you must consider is whether to buy solid state drive or hard disk drive. For laymen, the differences between the two may not be very glaring. However, both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages.

SSD is designed on the concept of flash memory for data storage. So, it does not have the disks that spin like in the conventional HDD. You can think of SDD as a huge USB drive.

SSD is faster and requires less power. They are almost noiseless and more durable. HDD on the other hand offer larger data capacities and are cheaper. If price is a concern and you need lots of storage, go for HDD.

Do you need portable or fixed?

This is another important factor to consider before buying the hard disk drive. How do you want to use the hard drive? Do you only need it for the storage purposes? Do you also need to install the OS? Do you want to install the OS and yet use it wherever you want to?

Portable hard disk drives connect to the computer externally via USB. They are a great choice for those who want to use the data on the go or with multiple computers that are not connected to the network. They can also be used as the backup storage device. The modern external hard disk USB 3.0 offer easy connectivity and are pretty fast too.

The physical size and form factor

Once you have chosen between SSD and HDD, you will need to consider form factor. The good thing is there isn’t much to choose from and this spares you from great deal of confusion. There are only two form-factors available today, 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch.

The traditional hard disk drives use the spinning disks made of metal and thus for more storage capacity more space is needed. This is the reason why most of the HDDs for desktop have the form factor of 3.5 and offer storage capacity up to 4TB. The HDDs for laptop have maximum storage capacity of 2TB with form factor of 2.5. On the other hand, higher capacity SSDs can fit in 2.5 inch form factor. But SSD can offer maximum 1TB capacity.

The price of the hard disk drive is determined by the above factors as well as many more, including transfer speed, cache space, access time, and a few more. Two hard disks offering same storage capacity can be priced differently depending upon the brand and quality.
